shakespeare tragedies
3 comedies or tragedies by Shakespeare?

In my english class, we need to choose a British author and read 3 works by him or her. I am considering Shakespeare

The 3 comedies I am considering are...
Much Ado About Nothing
Merchant of Venice
Twelfth Night
(I can't do Midsummer)

For the tragedies, I can't do Romeo & Juliet, Macbeth, King Lear, Julius Cesar or Hamlet
I was thinking of doing Othello, Antony and Cleopatra, and Timon of Athens

Any suggestions?

Oh my goodness, choose Twelfth Night! I loved Twelfth Night. Its fairly simple to understand, and its humorous.

I would do Othello. Iago (the villain) is such an interesting character, its worth reading just for that.

I would also consider King Richard. Its a history. It's really really good - its about this man who is the brother of the King - the King is dying and wants to get into power. He does anything it takes to become the new King. Al Pacino did a documentary about it, "Looking for Richard," which is absolutely amazing, and will help you if you decide to read it.

I'd also read the Tempest. It was Shakespeare's farewell to writing. Its about a man who is forced out of his country with his daughter - he ends up on this Island, and he learns magic. He calls this giant storm (Tempest) to bring back his family and other people in order to find closure in his life. There are spirits and monsters that inhabit the island. At the end of the book, he breaks his magic staff and retires from using magic - its Shakespeare's goodbye because he is saying goodbye to writing theatre. Its a really great story too.

Man, I love Shakespeare - no matter what you read, you're going to have a blast!
